The Difference Between the City of Alexandria and “Alexandria” in Fairfax County

City residents pay municipal taxes for Alexandria City Public Schools, local police, fire, and rec centers.

In contrast, the “Alexandriain Fairfax County is a census‑designated place under Fairfax County government. Residents there pay county taxes, use Fairfax County schools and services, and follow broader county planning and zoning rules.
