The Difference Between the City of Alexandria and “Alexandria” in Fairfax County
The City of Alexandria is an independent municipality, separate from any county, governed by its own mayor and council across 15 square miles (Old Town, Del Ray, Carlyle, West End, Potomac Yard and more). City residents pay municipal taxes for Alexandria City Public Schools, local police, fire, and rec centers.
In contrast, the “Alexandria” in Fairfax County is a census‑designated place under Fairfax County government. Residents there pay county taxes, use Fairfax County schools and services, and follow broader county planning and zoning rules.
